Abstract

Community reading culture in rural areas still faces various obstacles, such as limited access to reading materials, suboptimal management of community reading rooms, and low ability to use digital information critically and safely. These conditions highlight the need for mentoring that integrates strengthening reading rooms with digital literacy education. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to assist the community in managing reading rooms and provide digital literacy education as an effort to improve the reading culture of the Batulawang Village community. The PKM activity was implemented using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach combined with Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) principles. The activity included identifying community conditions and potential, participatory planning, revitalizing and mentoring the management of the Bale Sawala reading room, digital literacy education, practicing the critical and safe use of digital information sources, and monitoring and evaluation. Thirty participants, including children, adolescents, parents, and community leaders, participated in the activity. The mentoring resulted in increased community capacity in managing reading rooms and utilizing digital information sources. The Bale Sawala reading room was successfully organized and equipped with a collection of 150 books and a management system involving community working groups. Evaluation results showed an increase in participants' understanding of reading culture and digital literacy. The average participant comprehension score increased from 36.25 before the activity to 79.50 after the activity. Assistance with reading room management combined with digital literacy education can increase community capacity in developing reading rooms and strengthen reading culture in Batulawang Village.
