Abstract

The family is the first and foremost environment for the growth and development of early childhood. Parenting patterns play a crucial role in shaping children’s personality, emotional intelligence, and future happiness. However, in rural communities, parents’ understanding of children’s emotional needs is often limited, with greater emphasis placed on fulfilling physical needs alone. Based on this condition, a Parenting Workshop was conducted using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach in Purbahayu Village with the aim of increasing parents’ awareness of the importance of meeting early childhood emotional needs through the concept of the “5 Secret Batteries of a Happy Child.” The activity was carried out in several stages, including problem identification through initial community discussions, workshop planning, implementation using interactive lectures, group discussions, simulations, and reflections, followed by evaluation. Supporting instruments included parenting modules, presentation media, and activity documentation. The results showed a significant increase in parental participation, participant enthusiasm, and a deeper understanding of children’s emotional needs. In addition, changes in parents’ mindset regarding parenting patterns and home-based follow-up action plans were observed. These findings were discussed in relation to parenting theories and the 5 Secret Batteries of a Happy Child concept, which emphasizes fulfilling children’s needs for love, emotion, social interaction, morality, and spirituality. Overall, this parenting workshop proved effective in strengthening parental capacity in Purbahayu Village. The implications highlight the importance of sustainable parenting programs at the village level and open opportunities for universities to expand community service activities focused on family empowerment.
