Synergy between Zakat and Productive Waqf in Enhancing the Economic Self-Reliance of Mustahiq

Abstract

This study aims to analyze strategies for optimizing the management of zakat and productive waqf at the Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (BAZNAS) and their impact on transforming the economic self-reliance of mustahiq (zakat beneficiaries). The study focuses on exploring the strategic role of productive waqf as a permanent Islamic social finance instrument and its integration with zakat funds to strengthen the Sharia microfinance structure in Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was employed. The findings indicate that the synergy and integrated distribution of productive funds from both zakat and waqf significantly enhance the economies of scale and financial resilience of mustahiq. This integration provides access to more flexible, long-term capital, thereby boosting the productivity of small businesses and enabling them to compete in local markets. The success of this model demonstrates that the collaboration of social finance instruments can mitigate business failure risks through structured supervision and technical guidance systems under the auspices of BAZNAS.
